Initiatives supporting women in STEMM around Melbourne

The possibilities of STEMM, Courtesy TED.com

It heartens me to see so many initiatives popping up to support women in STEMM around the world, and tonnes of them in our own fair city.

I've put together a list of a couple of active organisations, so make sure to pick one and get involved!

Robogals is made possible by our amazing volunteers from universities and young professionals of all genders. We come from a wide range expertise from engineering to law to commerce and are all united under the cause of gender equity in engineering and technology. Chapters run engineering and technology workshops free-of-charge in their local communities, focusing on encouraging girls from primary to secondary school to explore an interest, as well as cultivate self-confidence, in these areas. Introducing female engineering students to girls at a young age also provides visibility to female role models, of which there is a significant deficit in the STEM field. The lack of relatable role models has been identified as a cause of low uptake for minorities in all professional and academic fields12. Regional initiatives such as The Robogals Challenge (EMEA) and Pathways Into Engineering (APAC) provide engagement outside of our workshops. These programs encourage self-learning and foster a long-term exposure to the engineering community at large.

We believe that gender equality in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) careers builds stronger economies. She Flies generates conversation around gender equality in STEM, using the world of drones to inspire and provide a platform for change to occur. She Flies builds high quality STEM leadership and learning opportunities through drone education.

Code Like a Girl is an organisation dedicated to providing girls with the tools, knowledge and support to enter and flourish in the world of coding. We run a series of tech-focused events and workshops around Australia; bringing together local talents and like-minded girls who are passionate about coding and technology to learn, connect and celebrate each other's achievements. Through our initiative, we hope to spark change in the tech community; inspiring new generations of girls to acquire coding as a skill and encourage more women to step into leadership roles within the industry. Overall it's about coming together, making new coding sisters and being there to support one another, help build each others confidence in what can sometimes be a daunting industry to work in. Thanks to the generous support of partners and sponsors, most of our events are free of charge and open to anyone.

Women in STEMM Australia is a non-profit organisation founded in 2014 which has grown into a nationally recognised association for women in science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medicine (STEMM). Our over-arching goal is to connect women in STEMM regardless of their discipline and profession. The momentum this has stimulated is exciting! Our website and social media profiles are our primary engagement platform and through these we connect with extraordinary people – hearing their stories, ideas and opinions, and networking like never before. Non-voting membership is free – register here – and our activities aim to benefit all women in STEMM.

Increased gender equity and diversity benefits everyone. If you identify as a woman in STEMM, or you are someone championing change in STEMM, then Women in STEMM Australia is for you. Men and women are welcome and encouraged to join – we welcome all. We adhere to the highest ethical standards and advocate increased diversity amongst women in STEMM. Our philosophy is “Pay It Forward”.

We are skilled digital professionals who want to increase the number of women with successful STEM careers. We work to see an increase of women in tech, women in games, women who make, female designers and female founders. Our initiatives include coding and hackathons, 3D printing and wearables, game development, design, entrepreneurship and startups. We also work with teachers, schools, corporates and startups to increase the number of women with professional technical and entrepreneurial skills.

We are women who wanted something like Girl Geek Academy to exist, so we built it. And we’d like you to join us.
